Decimal Notation & Number Lines

How the lesson starts: Decimal Notation & Number Lines

  1. The frog jump contest

Ribbit! Welcome to the Lily Pond Jump Contest! Freddy the frog jumps 62/100 of a meter. The judge writes it a new, quicker way: 0.62 m. That's a decimal! Let's learn to read and write decimals.

  2. Tenths on the line

Here's the jump track from 0 to 1 meter, split into 10 equal steps. Each step is 1/10, which we write as 0.1. Hoppy lands on the seventh step. That's 7/10 of a meter, written 0.7!

  3. Both ways

Tenths get one digit after the point: 7/10 = 0.7. Hundredths get two: 62/100 = 0.62, and 5/100 = 0.05. Going back, count the digits after the point. 0.3 is 3/10. 0.08 is 8/100.
