Multi-Digit Multiplication

How the lesson starts: Multi-Digit Multiplication

  1. Bolt's cookie factory

Whirr, clank! Meet Bolt, the cookie robot. Bolt bakes 47 trays, with 36 cookies on each tray. How many cookies is that? Let's teach Bolt to multiply big numbers!

  2. Break it apart

    First a warm-up. Bolt packs 243 cookies in each box and fills 6 boxes. Break 243 into 200, 40 and 3. Then 6 × 200 = 1,200. Next 6 × 40 = 240. Then 6 × 3 = 18. Add them up: 1,458 cookies!

  3. A cookie rectangle

    Back to 47 × 36! Split 47 into 40 and 7. Split 36 into 30 and 6. Now fill four boxes. 40 × 30 = 1,200. 40 × 6 = 240. 7 × 30 = 210. 7 × 6 = 42. Add all four parts: 1,692 cookies!
