Division with Remainders

How the lesson starts: Division with Remainders

  1. Hazel's acorn bags

Hi there! Hazel the squirrel gathered acorns for winter. She packs them into bags, the same number in every bag. Sometimes a few are left over! Let's divide with Hazel.

  2. Hop until you can't

    Hazel hops along a branch to 59, taking jumps of 8. She lands on 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48 and 56. That's 7 hops. Only 3 more to 59, too short for a jump! So 59 ÷ 8 = 7 remainder 3.

  3. A bigger pile

    Hazel has 312 acorns for bags of 4. 4 won't fit into 3, so try 31. 31 ÷ 4 = 7, with 3 left. Bring down the 2 to make 32. 32 ÷ 4 = 8. That's 78 bags, nothing left over! Check: 4 × 78 = 312.
