Grade 4 Math · Level 1, Numbers Through One Million

Place-Value ×10 Relationships

How the lesson starts: Place-Value ×10 Relationships

  1. Hopper's lily pads

Hi there! Meet Hopper the frog. Hopper hops along a row of lily pads. Each pad holds one digit. Today the pads say 53,482. What is each digit worth? Let's hop in!

  2. Every pad has a place

Start on the right. The 2 is in the ones. The 8 is in the tens. The 4 is in the hundreds. The 3 is in the thousands. The 5 is in the ten-thousands. So the 3 is worth 3,000!

  3. Two 7s, side by side

Now the pads say 7,700. Two 7s sit side by side. The right 7 is in the hundreds, so it's worth 700. The left 7 is in the thousands, so it's worth 7,000. And 7,000 = 10 × 700. The left 7 is worth 10 times as much!
