How the lesson starts: Read, Write & Expand Whole Numbers

The star counter
Hello, space cadet! Captain Zara flies the rocket Twinkle. Her star counter just flashed 35,120. That's a big number! Let's learn to read it and take it apart.
Read it with the comma
The comma is a helper. Read the part before it, then say thousand. Then read the rest. So 35,120 is thirty-five thousand one hundred twenty. And 420,609 is four hundred twenty thousand six hundred nine.
Take it apart
Now take 47,385 apart. The 4 is worth 40,000. The 7 is worth 7,000. The 3 is worth 300. The 8 is worth 80. The 5 is worth 5. Add the values. That's expanded form! Write 7,000, not just 7.
