Coordinate Plane in Four Quadrants

How the lesson starts: Coordinate Plane in Four Quadrants

  1. Finn's treasure map

Ahoy! Finn and his parrot Mango found a treasure map of Parrot Island. The map has two number lines crossing in the middle, and they keep going into negative numbers. That makes four parts. Let's read it!

  2. Left and down

Every point has x first, then y. Negative x means walk left. Negative y means walk down. The palm tree at (−3, 2): 3 steps left, then 2 up. The cave at (4, −2): 4 right, then 2 down.

  3. The four quadrants

The axes split the map into four quadrants, counted around the other way from a clock. I is top right (+, +). II is top left (−, +). III is bottom left (−, −). IV is bottom right (+, −).
