How the lesson starts: Grade-6 Geometry Bridge

Lily's garden plan
Lily is planning a community garden: a triangle flower corner, an L-shaped pumpkin patch, and a planter box. She needs to know how much space each one has. Let's help!
A triangle is half
Cut a 6 by 4 rectangle from corner to corner and you get two matching triangles. The rectangle is 24 square feet, so each triangle is 12. Triangle area = base × height ÷ 2. Base 8, height 5: 40 ÷ 2 = 20.
Split the L-shape
The pumpkin patch is shaped like an L. Split it into two rectangles! One is 5 by 3: 15 square feet. The other is 2 by 4: 8 square feet. Add them: 15 + 8 = 23 square feet.
