Statistical Variability & Distributions

How the lesson starts: Statistical Variability & Distributions

  1. Jump-rope day!

It's jump-rope day in Coach Sam's class! Every kid counts their jumps in 10 seconds. Coach Sam wonders: how many jumps do the kids in our class do? Let's be data detectives!

  2. A statistical question

A statistical question has answers that vary. How old am I? Just one answer, so it's not statistical. How old are the students in our class? Many different answers, so it is statistical!

  3. Mean and median

Five kids jump 2, 4, 5, 8 and 11 times. Mean: add them to get 30, and 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Median: they're in order, so the middle number, 5, is the median. Mean 6, median 5!
