Median, Mode & Range

How the lesson starts: Median, Mode & Range

  1. Jada's big season

Jada plays for the Comets basketball team. In five games she scored 12, 8, 15, 8 and 10 points. Her coach describes her scoring with three special numbers: the median, the mode and the range. Let's meet them!

  2. The median is the middle

To find the median, first put the scores in order: 8, 8, 10, 12, 15. Then find the middle one. With two scores on each side, 10 sits right in the middle. The median is 10! Watch out: always sort first.

  3. Mode and range

The mode is the value that shows up most often. 8 shows up twice, so the mode is 8. The range shows the spread: highest minus lowest. 15 − 8 = 7. So median 10, mode 8, range 7!
