Multi-Digit Multiplication
How the lesson starts: Multi-Digit Multiplication

Rosa's Bakery
Welcome to Rosa's Bakery! Rosa baked 34 trays of cupcakes, with 27 cupcakes on each tray. How many cupcakes is that? That's a big multiplication! Let's break it into bite-sized pieces.
Bite-sized pieces
Split both numbers into tens and ones: 30 and 4, 20 and 7. Now multiply each pair. 20 × 30 = 600. 20 × 4 = 80. 7 × 30 = 210. 7 × 4 = 28. These are partial products. Add them: 918 cupcakes!
Muffin rows
Rosa packs 6 rows of 243 muffins. Break 243 into 200, 40 and 3. 6 × 200 = 1,200. 6 × 40 = 240. 6 × 3 = 18. Add the pieces: 1,458 muffins! Watch out: 6 × 40 is 240, not 24.
