Multi-Digit Division

How the lesson starts: Multi-Digit Division

  1. Captain Coral's coins

Ahoy! Captain Coral and her parrot Pepper found a chest of gold coins. She wants to share them out fairly, in equal groups. That's a job for division. Let's learn to share like a pirate!

  2. Friendly chunks

    Share 936 coins among 6 pirates in friendly chunks. 6 × 100 = 600, leaving 336. 6 × 50 = 300, leaving 36. 6 × 6 = 36, leaving 0. Add the chunks: 100 + 50 + 6 = 156 coins each. Check: 6 × 156 = 936!

  3. Leftover crackers

Pepper has 725 crackers to share in groups of 18. 18 × 40 = 720. 725 − 720 leaves 5. 5 is less than 18, so no more groups. The answer is 40 remainder 5. Watch out: the remainder must be smaller than the divisor!
