Patterns & Paired Relationships

How the lesson starts: Patterns & Paired Relationships

  1. The sunflower twins

Meet twins Leo and Luna! They each planted a magic sunflower. Every day, Leo's flower grows 1 inch, and Luna's grows 2 inches. Their growth makes number patterns. Let's learn to follow pattern rules!

  2. Follow the rule

A pattern rule tells you where to start and what to do each time. Start at 3 and add 4. Hop: 7. Hop: 11. Then 15, 19 and 23. Those are the next five numbers! Luna's flower starts at 0 and adds 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

  3. Find the rule

    What's the rule for 6, 12, 18, 24? Check each jump. 6 to 12: add 6. 12 to 18: add 6. 18 to 24: add 6. The rule is add 6 each time. Watch out: not multiply by 6, because 6 × 6 would be 36!
