How the lesson starts: Unit Rates, Speed, Unit Pricing & Rate Conversions

Road trip!
Nina's family is on a road trip to the beach! Their car went 120 miles in 3 hours. Nina wonders: how far do we go in just 1 hour? That's a unit rate question. Buckle up!
What's a unit rate?
At the snack stop, 4 juice boxes cost 8 dollars. A unit rate tells how much for just one. Share the 8 dollars among 4 boxes: 8 ÷ 4 = 2. So one juice box costs 2 dollars.
Speed is a rate
The car drove 120 miles in 3 hours. Split the trip into 3 equal hops, one for each hour: each hop is 40 miles. So 120 ÷ 3 = 40 miles per hour. Reading works too: 18 lines in 6 minutes is 3 lines per minute.
