Ranger Milo's rope
Welcome to Camp Pinecone! Ranger Milo has a rope 12.8 m long. He uses 4.65 m to tie down the tent. How much is left? Trails, ropes and water jugs are full of decimals. Today you'll add and subtract them like a pro camper!
Line up the points
Milo hikes 47.06 km on Monday and 8.9 km on Tuesday. To add, line up the decimal points, so every digit sits under its own place. Write 8.9 as 8.90. That zero changes nothing, but it keeps the places straight. 47.06 + 8.90 = 55.96 km!
Fill the gap with 0
Back to the rope: 12.8 − 4.65. 12.8 has only one digit after the point, so write it as 12.80. Now the points line up. Subtract like whole numbers, and keep the point in place. 8.15 m of rope is left!
