How the lesson starts: Dot Plots, Histograms & Box Plots

Penguin lunchtime!
Hi! Zookeeper Nia feeds the penguins every day, and she writes down how many fish each one gobbles. That's a lot of numbers! A picture makes them easy to read. Today we'll draw a dot plot, where every penguin gets its own mark. Waddle along!
Read the stacks
In a dot plot, each mark is one data value, stacked above its number. Count the marks: 1 above 5, 3 above 6, 5 above 7, 2 above 8, 1 above 9. How many penguins ate 7 fish? That stack has 5. That's the frequency of 7: how often it appears.
Let's build a dot plot
Four penguins ate 1, 2, 2 and 4 fish. Draw a number line from 1 to 4. Put one mark for each penguin. The 1 gets one mark. The 2 gets two marks, stacked. The 3 gets none, but keep its spot. The 4 gets one mark.
