Measures of Center & Variation

How the lesson starts: Measures of Center & Variation

  1. Mini golf on the Moon!

Hi! Captain Zara's space crew is playing mini golf on the Moon. Each score is the number of strokes on a hole. What's a typical score? Today you'll learn three ways to find the center: the mean, the median and the mode. Fore!

  2. The mean: a fair share

Zara's scores on four holes: 4, 6, 8 and 10. The mean is the fair-share value. Add them up: 28. Divide by 4 holes: 7. Why divide? If you leveled out all the strokes evenly, every hole would get 7. See the dashed line at 7?

  3. Median and mode

Rover Rex scored 3, 3, 5, 6 and 9, already in order. The median is the middle value. Five scores, so the 3rd one: 5. The mode is the value that shows up most often. 3 appears twice, so the mode is 3. They don't have to match!
