Grade 2 English Language Arts · Level 3, Understand, recount, and analyze literary texts using details from words and illustrations.

Choose the Best Recount or Summary

Distinguish important events from minor details and choose or build a concise recount/summary of a literary text.

How the lesson starts: Choose the Best Recount or Summary

  1. Meet Tula

Meet Tula, a mouse reporter. Her notepad is tiny. It only fits the big news! So Tula picks the most important events. She leaves the small details out.

  2. The Great Hat Chase

Grandpa Ike wore his favorite hat to the park. It had a tiny blue feather on the side. Whoosh! The wind blew the hat into the pond. Nia's dog, Rolo, swam out and grabbed it. Rolo shook water on everyone. Grandpa Ike laughed.

  3. Keep it or skip it?

Tula asks one question. Does the story still work without it? The blue feather? Yes, it works without it. Skip it! The wind blowing the hat? Without it, there's no story. Keep it!
