Grade 2 English Language Arts · Level 4, Understand informational texts, text features, reasons, and sources; gather information for a purpose.
Find the Author’s Purpose
Identify the main purpose of an informational text, such as explaining, describing, answering, or exploring a topic.
How the lesson starts: Find the Author’s Purpose

Tully the mail mouse
Meet Tully. Tully is a tiny mouse who delivers mail. Every letter has a reason. Every text has a reason too. The author's purpose is why the author wrote it.
Reasons authors write
Authors write for different reasons. To explain tells how or why something happens. To describe tells what something is like. A story is made up. To persuade tries to get you to do something.
An explaining text
Tully opens a letter. Bees sip nectar from flowers. They carry it home to the hive. They fan it with their wings until it gets thick. Then it is honey! It tells how honey is made. It explains!
