Hear Rhythm and Word Play

Recognize how rhyme, alliteration, repeated words/lines, and regular beats contribute to rhythm and meaning in age-appropriate text.

How the lesson starts: Hear Rhythm and Word Play

  1. The Lily Pad Band

Boom, boom, boom! Meet Jojo the frog. Jojo plays drums in the Lily Pad Band. The band plays poems! Today Jojo listens for rhymes.

  2. Rhymes end the same

Listen. Cake, lake, snake. The ends sound the same, like the end of bake. Words that end with the same sound rhyme. The start can be different!

  3. Find the two that rhyme

Jojo has three words. Tree, sun, and knee. Say each one. Tree ends like bee. Sun ends differently. Knee ends like bee too! Tree and knee rhyme. Sun is the odd one out.
