Spell Longer and Affixed Words

Spell common two- and three-syllable, compound, prefixed, and suffixed words, including simple suffix-related spelling changes.

How the lesson starts: Spell Longer and Affixed Words

  1. Bolt adds endings

Beep boop! Meet Bolt, a robot builder. Bolt adds endings to words, like ing and ed. Sometimes a letter must change first. Let's build!

  2. Drop it or double it

Hope ends with a silent E. Drop the E before ing. Hoping! Hop has a short vowel and one last letter. Double that letter. Hopping! Jump just adds ing. Jumping!

  3. Words that end in Y

Does a word end with a consonant and Y? Change the Y to I. Cry becomes cried. Baby becomes babies. After a vowel, Y stays: played. Before ing, Y stays: crying. Box adds E S.
