How the lesson starts: Bridge: Expand Grade 4 Sentence and Verb Control

  1. All aboard!

All aboard the Time Train! Meet Tock, a clockwork cat and the train's conductor. The train stops at three stations: Past, Present, and Future. Verbs tell readers which station a sentence is at. Keep them on the right track!

  2. Time words

Time words tell you the station. Last night means past, so both verbs are past: cooked and sang. Every day means present: cooks and sings. Tomorrow means future: will cook and will sing. Both verbs ride the same train.

  3. Let's check the track

Tock checks every verb. Last night, Zoe baked bread and washed the pans. Both past. On track! Last night, Zoe bakes bread and washed the pans. Bakes jumped to the present. Derailed! Check every verb, not just the first one.
