Bridge: Summarize Literature and Informational Text

Begin summarizing a text by keeping central ideas/events and removing minor details.

How the lesson starts: Bridge: Summarize Literature and Informational Text

  1. Luna's postcards

This is Luna the llama. She writes postcards to her grandma about stories she reads. But postcards are tiny! Luna can't fit every detail. First, she decides which details are too small to pack.

  2. The Runaway Hat

Luna reads a story. Wind blew Kofi's hat off at the fair. He chased it past the pony rides. A duck in a tiny bow tie quacked at him. At last, a girl on a bike caught the hat. Kofi thanked her and held his hat tight.

  3. Let's pack or leave

Luna tries a test. Take a detail out. Does the story change? The hat blew away? Take it out, and there's no story! Pack it. The duck in a bow tie? Take it out, and nothing changes. Leave it home. It's too small.
