Grade 3 English Language Arts · Level 3, Understand Informational Text and Explain Ideas

Distinguish Your View from the Author’s View

Distinguish the reader’s own point of view from the author’s perspective or stance in informational text.

How the lesson starts: Distinguish Your View from the Author’s View

  1. Kofi's radio show

Welcome to Who Thinks That?, a radio show hosted by Kofi the koala! Every show, Kofi reads an article. Then he asks: what does the author think? Let's listen for clues.

  2. Facts or the author's view?

Some lines are facts. You could check them. Many classes keep a pet. Students take turns feeding it. Other lines show what the author thinks. Every classroom should have a pet. Not everyone agrees with that, so it is the author's view.

  3. Let's spot clue words

Authors leave clue words when they share their view. I believe. Should. Best. Other clues are I think, in my opinion, and wonderful. Spot them and you find the author's view.
