Use Text Features and Search Tools

Use headings, captions, graphics, key words, sidebars, hyperlinks, and related text features/search tools to locate and integrate relevant information efficiently.

How the lesson starts: Use Text Features and Search Tools

  1. Nuri's speedy deliveries

Meet Nuri, a squirrel who delivers facts across the forest. Nuri has to be fast. Reading a whole book for one fact takes all day! Nuri uses shortcuts called text features.

  2. Parts of a page

Nuri opens a page about sea turtles. The title names the whole topic. Headings name each part. A caption tells what a picture shows. A sidebar is a box with an extra fact. The page number tells where you are.

  3. Front, middle, back

A book has helpers in different places. At the front, the contents page lists chapters and pages. On each page, you meet titles, headings, and captions. At the back, the glossary tells what words mean. The index lists topics in A B C order.
