Match Writing to Audience, Purpose, and Task

Choose development, organization, detail, and tone appropriate to a stated task, purpose, and intended audience/length.

How the lesson starts: Match Writing to Audience, Purpose, and Task

  1. Eight arms, eight pens

Meet Leilani the octopus. She has eight arms, so she holds eight pens! She writes posters, stories, notes, and more. Before each one, she asks: why am I writing?

  2. Three big purposes

Writing has three big purposes. To give facts, like a report about coral. To tell a story, like a tale about a brave crab. To share an opinion, like which sea animal is best. The task words give clues.

  3. Let's sort the tasks

Explain how coral grows. Explain asks for facts. Write about a crab who loses its shell. A character means a story. Tell which sea animal is best and why. Best wants an opinion. Should the aquarium stay open late? Should means opinion again!
