Paraphrase and Combine Research Findings

Paraphrase source information in age-appropriate language and combine compatible findings without copying whole source sentences.

How the lesson starts: Paraphrase and Combine Research Findings

  1. Echo the copycat parrot

This is Echo the parrot. Echo repeats everything, word for word. Squawk! But in a report, copying is not okay. Echo must learn to say it her own way, and keep the meaning the same.

  2. Same meaning, new words

Here is the source. Bats use echoes to locate insects. Here it is in new words. Bats hunt bugs by listening for sounds that bounce back. The words changed, but the meaning stayed. That is a paraphrase!

  3. Let's check the meaning

Source: the moon reflects light from the sun. The moon shines because sunlight bounces off it. Same meaning! The sun reflects light from the moon. Oops, that is flipped! The moon makes its own light. Wrong fact! Only one keeps the meaning.
