Participate in Collaborative Discussion

Prepare for and engage in discussion by following norms, building on others’ ideas, asking clarifying questions, staying on topic, and explaining one’s own thinking.

How the lesson starts: Participate in Collaborative Discussion

  1. The Dragon Book Club

Welcome to the Dragon Book Club! Ember the dragon holds the talking marshmallow. Whoever holds it gets to speak, and everyone else listens. Then the next dragon builds on the idea!

  2. Build on an idea

Listen to Mia. I think the ant is brave because it carries a huge crumb. Now Ravi builds on it. I agree. It also kept going when the crumb got heavy. Ravi stayed on the topic and added a new detail!

  3. Builder starters

Builders start with helpful words. I agree, and. Yes, and. That fits, because. I noticed that too. Then they add something new about the same idea. Unkind or off-topic replies don't build anything!
