Grade 3 English Language Arts · Level 2, Read Literature Closely and Write Narratives

Plan and Organize a Narrative

Establish a situation, narrator/characters, and a logical event sequence before drafting a narrative.

How the lesson starts: Plan and Organize a Narrative

  1. Director Tuki

Meet Director Tuki, a turtle who makes movies. Tuki never films without a plan! She sketches the character, the place, and the problem. Then she films a great opening shot. Writers plan stories the same way.

  2. The plan card

Every plan starts with three things. The character: Amara, a curious girl. The setting: the town library. The problem: a green parrot flew in and will not leave!

  3. Let's pick the opening

The opening names the main character and the situation. Amara was a girl who liked books. That skips the situation. In the end, the parrot went home. That is an ending! Amara gasped at the green parrot on the library globe. Name and problem. Perfect!
