Report, Retell, and Explain Clearly

Report on a topic/text, tell a story, or recount an experience using appropriate facts/details and clear, understandable pacing; use complete sentences when appropriate.

How the lesson starts: Report, Retell, and Explain Clearly

  1. Zippy talks too fast

Zippy the cheetah is giving a talk about pumpkins. Pumpkins, seeds, vines, my uncle has a truck, the end! Whoa! Zippy adds random stuff. Pearl the snail will coach Zippy. Step one: pick details that belong.

  2. Details that belong

Zippy's talk is called How a Pumpkin Grows. Pearl checks each note card. A seed sprouts in warm soil. That belongs! Pumpkin pie is my favorite. Yummy, but it does not tell how a pumpkin grows.

  3. Let's test a card

Pearl tests each card with one question. Does it teach how a pumpkin grows? A green pumpkin grows and turns orange. Yes, keep it! My uncle has a truck. No, toss it! Ask the same question for every card.
