Grade 3 English Language Arts · Level 4, Build Strong Sentences, Paragraphs, and Opinions

Use Capitalization, Punctuation, Dialogue, and Possessives

Apply Grade 3 conventions for titles, commas, quotation marks, addresses, apostrophes, and singular/plural possessives in context.

How the lesson starts: Use Capitalization, Punctuation, Dialogue, and Possessives

  1. Mail day!

Brrr! Welcome to the Snowy Post Office. Postmaster Bao the penguin checks every package before it ships. First check: capital letters! Titles and names need them.

  2. Title capitals

A book title is on this package. In a title, capitalize the first word, the last word, and every important word. Small words like the, and, of, to, and in stay small, unless they come first.

  3. Names get capitals

Names of people, days, months, and places always get capitals. Zainab, Tuesday, May, and Chicago are names. Friend, day, month, city, and summer are not names. Seasons stay small! And the first word of a sentence gets a capital too.
