Revise for Clarity and Stronger Word Choice

Revise writing to improve clarity, precision, sentence flow, and word choice using feedback or reference tools.

How the lesson starts: Revise for Clarity and Stronger Word Choice

  1. The Word Gym

Welcome to the Word Gym! Coach Amara the gorilla trains tired, weak words until they get strong. Revising means making writing clearer and stronger. Let's warm up with one word at a time!

  2. Pump up the verb

Here is a sentence. The rabbit went into the hole in a great hurry. Went is a weak, plain verb. The clue in a great hurry tells us it was fast. Dashed shows the speed. Now we can picture it!

  3. Let's pick a strong word

The tired dog walked slowly up the steep hill. Which stronger word fits? Trudged means walked slowly and heavily. Yes! Sprinted is strong, but the clues say slowly. Floated is silly. Dogs can't float! Strong words must fit the clues.
