Write Clear Procedures and Conditional Steps

Understand and produce clear step-by-step procedural language, including sequence words and simple if/then conditions; this is an enrichment extension from a project-based research and procedural-writing unit.

How the lesson starts: Write Clear Procedures and Conditional Steps

  1. Bolt does EXACTLY that

This is Bolt, Farah's helper robot. Bolt is very good at following directions. Too good! Bolt does exactly what the steps say, in exactly that order. So Farah must put her steps in the right order.

  2. Farah's paper hat

Here are Farah's directions for a paper hat. First, fold the paper in half. Next, fold the top corners to the middle. Then, fold the bottom strips up. Finally, open it and put it on! See the order words light up?

  3. Let's order the seed steps

To put steps in order, ask: what must happen before this? You can't drop a seed in before there's soil. You can't water it before the seed is in. So: fill a pot, poke a hole, drop the seed in, then water it.
