How the lesson starts: Bridge: Organize Grade 5 Evidence-Based Writing

Oona's Idea Workshop
Meet Oona, an octopus who runs the Idea Workshop. With eight arms, she files every idea in the right drawer. Today, Oona is writing an opinion paragraph. First, she sorts her evidence cards.
Opinion and reasons
Oona's opinion: our town should build a splash pad. An opinion needs reasons. Reason one: it keeps kids cool. Reason two: it brings families together. Each reason becomes a drawer for evidence.
File the cards
Read each card and ask what it proves. Last July hit 95 degrees for a week. That proves kids need cooling, so it goes under reason one. Parents picnic while kids splash. That proves families gather, so it goes under reason two.
