How the lesson starts: Bridge: Use Grade 5 Verb and Conjunction Patterns

  1. All aboard the Time Trolley

Meet Captain Tock, a kangaroo who drives the Time Trolley. Tock loves verbs that show one action finished before another time. By noon, Tock had finished the puzzle. Hop on!

  2. Three perfect tenses

There are three perfect tenses. Each uses a helper. Past perfect uses had. Present perfect uses has or have. Future perfect uses will have. Time words give clues: by noon, so far, by Friday.

  3. Name the tense

By noon, Tock had finished the puzzle. Look at the helper before the verb: had. Had means past perfect. The puzzle was done before noon. If the helper were will have, it would be future perfect.
