Build Complete Compound Sentences

Recognize independent clauses, use coordinating conjunctions, and repair fragments and run-ons.

How the lesson starts: Build Complete Compound Sentences

  1. Birch builds bridges

Down by Maple Creek, Birch the beaver builds bridges. Not just log bridges. Sentence bridges! But first, every island must be solid. A solid island is a complete sentence. Her little brother, Pebble, learns how to check.

  2. A complete island

A complete sentence needs a subject. That's who or what it is about. It needs a predicate. That's what the subject does or is. And it must be a whole thought. The otter slid down the bank. Complete!

  3. Sort Birch's notes

A fragment is a broken piece. Birch sorts her notes. Pebble swam across the creek. Complete! Under the old bridge. Who did what? Fragment. When the rain stopped. Then what happened? Fragment. It leaves you hanging.
