Grade 4 English Language Arts · Level 5, Write, Research & Present

Plan, Draft, Revise, Edit, and Publish

Use a writing process appropriate to purpose and audience, incorporate feedback, and use digital tools to produce and publish clear multi-paragraph writing.

How the lesson starts: Plan, Draft, Revise, Edit, and Publish

  1. Chef Bao's kitchen

Chef Bao the bear bakes the best honey buns in the forest. He writes the same way he bakes, one step at a time. Today he's writing a report about honeybees for the Forest News.

  2. Five steps

Bao follows five steps. Plan your ideas. Draft them fast. Revise to make the ideas better. Edit to fix mistakes. Then publish: type it, add a title, and share it with readers.

  3. Why this order?

Each step needs the one before. You can't draft without a plan. Revise the big ideas before you edit. Otherwise you might polish a sentence you later cut. Publish last, when everything is ready. Just like baking: mix, bake, then frost!
