Understand Figurative Expressions
Interpret simple similes, metaphors, idioms, adages, and proverbs in context.
How the lesson starts: Understand Figurative Expressions

Beep takes it literally
Amara has a new robot named Beep. Beep takes every word literally. That means exactly word for word. Amara said her baby brother was as quiet as a mouse. Beep went looking for a mouse!
Similes: like or as
A simile compares two things using like or as. Amara ran like a rocket. She didn't blast off! She ran very fast. The lake was as smooth as glass. It was calm and flat, not made of glass.
Think it through
Ravi ran like the wind. What does it mean? First, spot the simile: like the wind. Then ask, what is the wind known for? It moves fast. So Ravi ran very fast. Not cold, and not blown away!
