Use Roots and Affixes

Use common Greek/Latin roots and affixes to decode and determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

How the lesson starts: Use Roots and Affixes

  1. Kai's secret code

Inventor Kai names every invention with a secret code. The code is made of word parts. Each part has its own meaning. Her pet raccoon, Gizmo, wants to crack it. First, Gizmo must learn what the parts mean.

  2. Front parts, end parts

Prefixes go at the front. Un means not. Re means again. Pre means before. Tri means three. Suffixes go at the end. Less means without. Ful means full of. Able means it can be done.

  3. Gizmo matches parts

Watch Gizmo match three parts. Re goes with again, like in redo. Less goes with without, like in fearless. Tri goes with three, like in triangle. Thinking of a word you know helps you remember the meaning.
