Bridge: Evidence + Objective Summary

Begin Grade 6 work by citing textual evidence and identifying theme/central idea while keeping summaries objective.

How the lesson starts: Bridge: Evidence + Objective Summary

  1. The Moon Gazette

Welcome to the Moon Gazette, the only newspaper on the Moon. Editor Bolt, a very tidy robot, has one rule for his new reporter, Anika the fox. Prove it with the text!

  2. Evidence proves an idea

An analysis is a smart idea about a text. Editor Bolt's analysis: otters work hard to stay warm. Which sentence proves it? Otters spend hours grooming every day. That's real work, and it keeps them warm.

  3. Proof, or just true?

New analysis: otters have special ways to stay warm. Otters live in icy water? True, but it's the problem, not a way. The thickest fur of any animal? A special way! Watch out: being true isn't enough. Evidence must prove the exact idea.
