Bridge: Analyze Development

Begin analyzing how plot, characters, events, or ideas unfold and interact across a text.

How the lesson starts: Bridge: Analyze Development

  1. Up, up and away!

Climb into the Story Balloon! Pilot Bao, a badger in flying goggles, says every story travels somewhere. A character at takeoff is not always the same at landing.

  2. Track the change

Juniper the hedgehog teases her little brother Moss about his kite. Then she remembers her own broken kite. At the end, she helps him fly it. Teasing, remembers, helping.

  3. Bao thinks aloud

The question: at first, Juniper teases Moss. Which detail shows her response at the end? Bao hunts near the end. Kites are babyish? A beginning detail. Out! The string snapped? An event, not Juniper's response. Out! She brought tape and string? Her new response. Yes!
