Nana Ife's story quilt
Meet Nana Ife, who sews story quilts. Each square holds one part of a story. Nana says no square is there by accident. Every part has a job.
Four jobs
Here is the story on Nana's newest quilt. The first part introduces the setting and the problem. The second explains why the narrator hates rain. The third contrasts, showing a neighbor who loves it. The last concludes.
Let's name a job
What does part 3 add? It starts with but, a contrast clue. And it shows Lu dancing in puddles, the opposite of the narrator's hate. So it contrasts with the part just before it. Watch out: clue words help, but check what the part really does.
