Compare Stories in the Same Genre

Compare how two stories in the same genre approach similar themes, topics, plots, or conventions.

How the lesson starts: Compare Stories in the Same Genre

  1. The night library

When the lights go out, Dusk the bat opens the night library. She shelves stories by genre, a family of stories that share features. Today she's checking two mysteries.

  2. Genre features

Each genre has features, like a family resemblance. A mystery has a puzzle, clues, a detective and a surprising solution. An adventure has a journey, danger to face, a brave hero and a return home.

  3. Let's match details

Story A: socks vanish from Ravi's clothesline. That's the puzzle. He follows muddy paw prints. Those are a clue. He finds a squirrel's nest. That's the surprising solution. Each detail shows one mystery feature.
