Decode Long Words

Break unfamiliar multisyllabic words into syllables and meaningful parts, then read them accurately in and out of context.

How the lesson starts: Decode Long Words

  1. Brix's word forge

Welcome to the forge of Master Brix, the word blacksmith. Long words don't scare Brix. She builds them from small pieces, hammered together in the right order. Today you'll build words with her.

  2. Front, middle, end

Every piece has a spot. A prefix goes at the front, like re, which means again. The root word sits in the middle, like play. A suffix goes at the end, like ing. Re, play, ing. Replaying means playing something again!

  3. Let's build a word

Brix's clue says: not kind or welcoming. The tiles are ly, un, friend and less. Not means un, so un goes in front. The root is friend. Ly goes on the end. Less is an extra tile, so leave it. Unfriendly!
