Grade 5 English Language Arts · Level 4, Grammar & Sentence Craft

Keep Verb Tense Clear and Consistent

Use verb tense to show time, sequence, states, and conditions; recognize and repair inappropriate tense shifts.

How the lesson starts: Keep Verb Tense Clear and Consistent

  1. Zuri the tense tailor

Zuri is a mouse who sews stories. She stitches every sentence with a time thread: blue for the past, orange for the present, green for the future. The time clue picks the thread.

  2. Clue picks the thread

A time clue at the start tells you the tense. Yesterday means past: Zuri stitched a cape. Every morning means present: Zuri stitches a cape. Tomorrow means future: Zuri will stitch a cape.

  3. Let's pick a verb

Last week, the class blank a model volcano. The clue is last week. That's past! Builds is present. Will build is future. Built is past. Built matches the clue!
