Understand Story, Drama, and Poem Structure

Explain how chapters, scenes, or stanzas fit together and contribute to the overall structure and development of a text.

How the lesson starts: Understand Story, Drama, and Poem Structure

  1. All aboard!

Toot toot! Conductor Oona the otter runs the Story Train. Every car carries one part of a story, and every part has a job. Take a car away, and the whole train falls apart.

  2. Name the cars

Different texts have different cars. A story is split into chapters. A drama, or play, is split into scenes. A poem is split into stanzas, groups of lines. Different names, same idea: parts that build the whole.

  3. Let's match the jobs

Here is the outline of Otto's story. Chapter 1: his map blows away before the race. That introduces the problem. Chapter 2: he searches three places. That shows the struggle. Chapter 3: he finds it just in time. That solves the problem.
