Use Commas and Series Punctuation

Use punctuation for items in a series, introductory elements, yes/no, tag questions, and direct address.

How the lesson starts: Use Commas and Series Punctuation

  1. Tilly's road trip

Tilly the tortoise is driving her van to the lake. She knows a secret: a comma is a tiny rest stop for your reader. Her first rest stops go in lists.

  2. Commas in a list

When you list three or more things, put a comma after every item except the last one. We packed water, snacks, maps, and hats. Lists of describing words work the same: the tunnel was dark, rocky, and quiet.

  3. Let's add commas

Tilly's list: we saw ducks geese swans and frogs. Count the items: ducks, geese, swans, frogs. That's four. Put a comma after each one except the last. Ducks, geese, swans, and frogs. Watch out: no comma after frogs!
