Use Roots and Affixes

Use common Greek and Latin roots and grade-appropriate affixes to infer word meaning and decode unfamiliar words.

How the lesson starts: Use Roots and Affixes

  1. Dr. Inés's lab

Under the sea, Dr. Inés the octopus runs a busy lab. Her jars are labeled with tiny word parts: bio, geo, tele. Each part has a meaning. Learn the parts, and big science words open up.

  2. Parts on the shelf

Here are parts from Dr. Inés's shelf. Bio means life, like biology. Geo means earth, like geology. Tele means far, like telescope. Photo means light. Aqua means water, like aquarium.

  3. Let's match parts

Dr. Inés must match three jars: aud, port and tri. Think of a word you know. Audio is sound you hear, so aud means hear. A porter carries bags, so port means carry. A tricycle has three wheels, so tri means three.
