One spelling pattern per list, with word games and the words a parent adds for the week.
Grade 1
6 levels · 36 lists
- Spell short-vowel words with a and i, like bat, can, fin and kid, plus tiny two-letter words like at, is and up.
- Spell short-vowel words with o, u and e (got, pup, yes), double letters at the end (will, miss), and first two-part words like sunset.
- Spell words with the letter pairs sh, ch, th and ck (ship, chop, moth, duck) and words that start or end with two consonants (flip, fast).
- Spell long-vowel words that end in a silent e (cake, bike, home), see how adding e changes a word (can, cane), and learn tricky words like have and come.
- Spell long-vowel words with the vowel teams ee, ea, ai and oa (sheep, peach, snail, boat), and add the endings -s and -ing.
- Spell the tricky sight words children see most (the, said, was, they, of, what) and word families like ball, pink, sing and cold.
Grade 2

- Spell words that start or end with two consonants together (frog, stop, hand) and the sounds sh, ch, th, wh, ck and ng.
- Spell long-vowel words that end in a silent e (cake, bike, home, cute) and words ending in -ce, -ge and -dge.
- Spell long-vowel words with vowel teams (rain, tree, boat, night), y at the end of a word, and longer two-syllable words.
- Spell words where r changes the vowel (car, corn, bird) and vowel sounds like oi, oy, ou, ow, oo and aw.
- Build bigger words with endings (-s, -es, -ed, -ing), the prefixes un- and re-, contractions, and tricky sight words.
Grade 3

- Your child spells long vowel and bossy r sounds inside longer words, like mistake, sunshine, carpet and squirrel.
- Your child learns spellings that depend on where a sound falls in a word: -ck or -k, -dge or -ge, -tch or -ch, -le, soft c and g, and c or k.
- Your child adds endings that change the base word: doubling (sitting), dropping the e (smiled) and changing y to i (cries, happier).
- Your child builds new words with the prefixes un-, dis-, re- and pre- and the suffixes -ful, -less, -ly, -ness, -ment, -er and -est.
- Your child spells sound-alike words, compound words, contractions and plurals that don't just add -s, like children and geese.
