How the lesson starts: Broader Fraction Equivalence & Comparison — Intro

Mira's ribbon shop
Hello! Mira runs a ribbon shop. A customer wants 1/2 of a ribbon. But Mira's ribbon is cut into 10 equal pieces! How many pieces make one half? Then we'll compare ribbons too!
Same length, more pieces
Here is a ribbon cut in 2 equal parts, with 1 shaded. That's 1/2. The same ribbon cut in 10 parts, with 5 shaded, is 5/10. Same length! And 1/5 matches 2/10. Cut each fifth in half to get 2 tenths.
The same-number trick
To change 3/4 into twelfths, ask: 4 times what is 12? 4 × 3 = 12. Now do the same to the top: 3 × 3 = 9. So 3/4 = 9/12. Watch out: 8/12 is close, but it's one piece short!
