How the lesson starts: Place Fractions on a Number Line

1. The great snail race

   Hi friend! Shelly the snail is racing to the finish flag! Her track starts at 0 and ends at 1. Where is she along the way? Fractions can tell us!

2. Equal spaces

   Here is Shelly's track, from 0 to 1. It is cut into 4 equal spaces. Count the spaces as she hops: 1, 2, 3, 4. Each space is 1/4 of the track. So one hop from 0 lands on 1/4!

3. Let's place 1/3

   Put 1/3 on the track. The bottom number is 3, so the track needs 3 equal spaces. The top number is 1, so Shelly hops just 1 space from 0. She lands on the first tick after 0. That's 1/3!
